With the warm weather that Mammoth has been experiencing in the past week, some bears are out and about. Unfortunately, one bear's early rising led to his untimely death. At approximately 3 a.m. on Saturday morning, Jan. 15, the large cinnamon bear that Steve says often sleeps next to Ace, was hit by a car on Hwy. 203. The bear was injured and had to be put down. It was weighed in at 448 pounds.

It's winter in Mammoth so the bears are nestled into their dens, fast asleep. Steve knows where they all are, but much of the rest of the town does not, which is for the best since the critters need their R&R.
